A Journey into the Invisible.
"Don't tell me. Show me."
Some ideas begin as a sketch.
Others begin as a conversation.
Together with my artist friend Joanneke Meester, I started imagining a series of film performances. We called ourselves MeesterStorteboom.
Everything had to happen inside a circle.
A circus.Firefighters.Children in a schoolyard.Skaters.People in traditional costume.A fairground.Even the everyday rituals of a department store.
At first we thought we were making films.
Slowly we realised we were designing experiences.
The circle was no longer something to paint.
It became a place where people could meet.
Where everyone became part of the image.
Looking back, I recognise the same question that had followed me for years.
How can art move beyond the object?
How can it become something that is lived?
The Circle Project never became what we first imagined.
It became something more important.
It taught me that the artwork does not always have to survive.
Sometimes the experience is the work.
For the first time I became interested in movement itself.
Painting captures a single moment.
Film follows transformation.
The circle only exists because people move through it.
